History of LGED

Country of Agriculture-based Economy Bangladesh Rural development is very important in achieving economic development of this country. At the beginning of the 60s of the last century, four programs of Comilla Model were adopted for rural development, including-

Thana Training and Development Center (TTDC)


Rural Works Program (RWP)


Thana Irrigation Program-TIP and


Two Tier Co-operatives

 

The implementation of rural development programs included in the Comilla Model was primarily the basis of the development of rural infrastructure. Later, in the 1970s, an engineering cell was formed to implement the program under the Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operative Ministry, which was transformed into 'Works Program Wing' under the Development Budget in 1982. Under the Workers Program Wing Revenue Budget in October 1984, the Local Government Engineering Bureau (LGEEB) was reconstituted. In August 1992, LGEEB was upgraded to the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).

 

LGED, implementing the work of the remaining three except the two-stage cooperative program, among the four programs under the Comilla model. These activities- rural infrastructure development, small water resources development and urban development. These three sectors are implemented under. LGED is a decentralized organization, which accounts for ninety eight percent of the workforce at the field level.
